Licensing out OS X has been a fairly big discussion and via my last video it sparked up yet again. This is an addition to my previous series with new information and outlook. I have a series of links that accompany the video as follows: For the section on clones, these articles explain the true problems of Apple as the clones were only a very small part of its demise. Apple suffered from product recalls and inventory/production management. Another variable that many miss is that Apple made 11.5 Billion in total annual sales just as the clone program started very late 1994. Here is the 11.5 billion links: news.cnet.com www.guardian.co.uk links on Apple’s real problems buck.com www.time.com www.nytimes.com www.google.com news.cnet.com Q1 2009 revenue www.macworld.com Desktops and Laptops decline and growth: lowendmac.com www.osnews.com www.reuters.com Sales trend www.systemshootouts.org Net Sales NOT annual Sales aaplinvestors.net 1995 was 11.5B and in 2008 Mac Annual Sales were 14.27B

Apple DID license out its OS in the 1990′s, and look what happened. Apple starting recovering almost immediately after killing off the clones.

knowing the price of hardware with the exception of some specific design parts, Apple’s cost is low especially for all internals as it is no longer PPC. That said, how much of the Mac price is OSX? A good chunk of it. Vs MS at higher volume OEMs have it better for pricing so why not then free it. Cost is cost and the more that use it the more OSX gains.

I don’t think so some how. If people can get and experience OS X on a cheaper machine, Apple doesn’t have a business model anymore. Apple’s core profits are in hardware sales. They are a hardware company that also makes software to accompany them. Companies with monopolies don’t give them up

that is a great point

I’m willing to bet Apple’s hardware sales would increase, not decrease if OS X was set free. Simply because outside of the US the Mac is a relatively alien platform, licensing out OS X would increase awareness of OS X 10 fold, and a percentage of those new to OS X would choose a Mac.

Dell has on many occasions tried to get get OS X but apple has always turned them down. Dell said if they had apple os that is all they would on their machines……. We can wish ‘sigh’

Because Apple will be stubbornly against this idea forever, the only hope is that Linux will continue to develop until they reach the same point that Apple has reached.

Actually all OEMs design their own hardware use just like Apple. All take the time to decide what parts and configurations work best.
July 28th, 2010 at 1:14 am
Apple does not make the own hardware anymore. They design it, but that has to do with ergonomics, not performance. There would be no difference actually running on an authorized OEM vs Apple hardware, its architecture is the same. The only comparison to make is the life expectancy of the hardware, like how long does a Dell hard drive last vs Apples

My question is, that If Apple opens up OS X to OEM’s, what would that do to the performance of the OS?
Since Apple makes it’s own hardware, what would happen to OSX if it had to be compatible with hundreds of vendors?
