Dell offers its quad core laptop, the Dell Precision M6400 laptop, which is designed mostly for office applications and has a wide array of feature that allows it to run programs that are intended for use in both the office and the industrial realm.

At its Mobility conference in Monaco, Dell unleashed a laptop that you wouldn’t really want to place on your lap; a notebook of seismic proportions that, at its lightest, still is a snip under 4kg. Named the Dell Precision M6400 (Dell precision m6400 Battery), the lappie is catering for filmmakers, architects, engineers and those who pay ten times for their software than they do for the machine’s they use to run it.For the M6400, Precision definitely means power. The first thing we did was pick it up. While it’s lighter than a desktop PC, it will certainly stay on the top of your desk.At full power the M6400 houses 16GB of RAM and a terabyte of storage in RAID.
 
We asked if any post-production studio had swapped their desktop for a laptop, and Dell assured us that while it was too early to tell, there were lots of talk on Dell’s blog about creatives using Maya on it and being mightily impressed. As the ‘laptop’ is aimed at those in the creative sector, the M6400 boasts a 100 per cent colour gamut – great for photographers – a full size keyboard and a touchpad that allows you to flick through film rushes, RAW files and the like. The trackpad is so good that it illuminates the controls you need depending on how you want to use it – a bit like the technology used in the Motorola ROKR E8.

There’s only one word to define the capabilities of the M6400 mobile workstation, and that is power. This little Mini 110 Battery machine has simply lots of it. It has a very “muscled” process that runs speeds in excess of 2 GHz, but it has a big memory as well. Who wouldn’t agree that the combination of high processor speed and a whopping 8 gigabytes of RAM is a recipe for excellent performance? You can run memory-heavy applications like CAD programs and hardcore games without the fear that your notebook will be giving up anytime.

Expandability of physical memory is also one of the plus points for this laptop. As if the 256-gigabyte hard drive is not enough for your needs, you have the choice of adding one more. The M6400 Covet is equipped with two bays to accommodate one more hard drive to add to the pre-installed one. Downloaders and those that deal with large amounts of data will certainly appreciate this option to add more hard drive space to their inventory.

People usually gripe about the screen being too bright or too dim in certain situations, but with the M6400 that problem is non-existent. Dell has given this neat machine a feature that addresses that problem – which is found in only a few notebooks produced by its competitors – by simply sensing how much ambient light is there and automatically adjusts screen brightness and contrast to compensate. This can help save battery power as well.

Its connectivity options are nothing but topnotch. The M6400 can accommodate up to four USB-running devices. Plus it also has a card reader capable of reading up to 8 types of memory cards. The M6400 can also accommodate more memory due to the four DIMM slots inside it.

It’s clear to see that the Dell Precision M6400 battery – complete with 17-inch 1920 x 1200 screen – is a laptop that may well tip the balance when it comes to choosing a high-end desktop over a laptop. Boasting power that will rival any tower – if you are willing to pay out for the full spec machine – it completely re-imagines what laptops are capable of.

As for mobility, well you might want to look elsewhere, as this is one laptop you won’t want to carry around for too long.
